I think the new law states that if that sort of foul happens outside the penalty area, then it's a red card and a foul. If it happens inside, a penalty and a yellow card beacause they state that a penalty is punishment enough

I believe the reason they gave a penalty and not a red card is the double-jeopardy rule, the ref must have considered Rodri was trying to play the ball, and therefore, since it's already a penalty, he showed a yellow card insterad of a red one.

United fan here. I saw all the reports on Friday ahead of the final, and said to friends, they either fire him on Monday after the final (give him the van Gaal) or they don't fire him at all. When Monday, then Tuesday rolled around, I knew he was staying. I don't hate the decision to keep him on, but as you say, if November comes around and United haven't been playing well and are 7/8/9 points off the top four. Then they are doing a more expensive sacking than if they'd done it on the Monday after the cup final.

Love these updates. African qualifying is mad, and I'm wondering that, maybe because there are now more spots for African teams to qualify for WC, they are all giving it everything, and the traditional powerhouses have been caught off guard. WC 2026 could be a bit like WC 2006 with some lesser known African teams qualifying. In 2006 we didn't have the mainstays of Nigeria, Cameroon, or surprise team of 2002, Senegal. Instead, Togo and Angola. Plus Cote d'Ivoire in their first ever world cup. Although Cote d'Ivoire wasn't too surprising as they had Didier Drogba leading a golden generation of Ivorians playing for European clubs, it was their first appearance.

They scored. Apparently if they don’t score and the attacking team committed the offence you do give an indirect free kick (why the difference? If anything you should punish them for scoring, no?) but Croatia SCORED. That should be a retake. Was it again an issue of blowing before it went in or?

There's newer facets to penalty rules where it's usually only given as a red if the player has endangered the opponent's safety (sadly as a Scot - the Porteous red because he almost breaks an ankle). Double punishment is now frowned upon, even for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity inside the box. Has been for a while.

English referee and Var room... what do you expect

Not sure Portugal can be a dark-horse, for me they have the third best squad on paper. Not sure a 39 year old legend is helping their cause, but they have such a dynamic and talented attacking midfield they really could win it. Maybe it's Premier League bias from me, but I think Portugal have more star players than Spain or Germany, based on seeing the starting 11s from those two teams in their games so far. Portugal could well line up with Cancelo, Dalot, Dias, Palhinha, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Diogo Jota, and some fella who plays in Saudi.

I've always been of the opinion that if you give away a penalty you can't be red carded, unless it's some egregious 2 foot leg breaker. Like you the penalty gives you a pretty decent chance of a goal scoring opportunity as compensation. It's only outside the box when it's a red. That's what I've always understood it to be in the prem, and these were prem referees (even uk ones in var which I do think is strange). Maybe this is a myth or the rules changed, not sure. This was 100% a dive and I'm bewildered how VAR didn't overruled, but then they were also English and they never seem to rule correctly

But WHY flop, the goalie was down and beaten, empty net!!! Slimy behaviour at least, soccer players are down an awful unsportmanship spiral. Happy was not rewarded by karma, whatever team does it.
